Mahama Holds Ofankor–Nsawam Road Contractor to June 2026 Deadline

President John Mahama has issued a stern directive to the contractor handling the Ofankor–Nsawam road project, emphasizing that the government will hold them accountable for meeting the June 2026 completion deadline.

The President made these remarks during an inspection of the ongoing construction on the vital arterial road on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

The Ofankor–Nsawam road, a critical link between Accra and Kumasi—Ghana’s two largest cities—has been plagued by delays, causing significant inconvenience to commuters and raising questions about financial oversight. President Mahama expressed frustration over the project’s mismanagement, noting, “A loan was taken for this project, and I don’t understand why the money is finished and the project is not over.”

He highlighted an additional government expenditure of GH¢78 million to keep the project on track, calling for an investigation into whether the initial estimates were inaccurate or if other issues contributed to the shortfall.

While acknowledging recent improvements in traffic flow, the President urged the contractor to prioritize effective site management to minimize disruptions for motorists.

“So we will hold you to your word. You say by the end of the second quarter next year, you should be finished,” he cautioned, reinforcing the government’s commitment to enforcing the timeline.

President Mahama also revealed that the project has been integrated into the government’s Big Push programme, with GH¢14 billion allocated this year and an additional GH¢30 billion earmarked for 2026.

“As the government commits to pay you well, you too must commit to move faster on the road and also use quality materials,” he stressed, appealing to the contractor’s reputation as one of Ghana’s leading road construction firms. “We hope this project will reflect the quality of your brand.”

The President’s visit follows a recent apology from the Deputy Roads Minister to motorists for the poor condition of the Ofankor–Nsawam road, which has long been a source of frustration for commuters.

With the government’s renewed focus and funding, the project is now under intense scrutiny to deliver on time and to a high standard
