Local Government Minister Demands Accountability from MMDAs After One Year in Office

The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has called on all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country to prepare to fully account for their performance and the utilisation of public resources after one year in office.

The minister made the call during a working visit to the Ga West, Ga East, and Ga North Municipal Assemblies in the Greater Accra Region. The tour forms part of the Ministry’s broader assessment of development projects and initiatives undertaken by various MMDAs since assuming office.

Accompanied by the Deputy Minister and senior officials from the ministry, Mr. Ibrahim inspected ongoing and completed projects in the three assemblies.

He reminded the MMDAs that the government has provided substantial financial support through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to undertake development and legacy projects aimed at improving the living conditions of residents.

“The funds are not meant to sit in bank accounts to be worshipped; they are meant to be utilized to bring development and improve the lives of the people in our communities,” the minister stressed.

Mr. Ibrahim expressed disappointment with the level of work executed by the Ga West Municipal Assembly despite the resources it received, emphasising the need for value for money and visible impact on the lives of residents.

In contrast, he commended the Ga North Municipal Assembly for the effective use of both the District Assemblies Common Fund and its Internally Generated Funds (IGF), noting satisfaction with the quality and impact of projects implemented there.

The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting accountability, transparency, and efficient service delivery at the local level. He urged all MMDAs to remain focused on delivering tangible development outcomes and to be ready to defend their stewardship when called upon.

The assessment tour is expected to extend to other assemblies across the country as part of efforts to ensure prudent management of public funds and accelerated development at the local level.
