Kwahu Yerenkyi Krom School Closed as Residents Protest Alleged Galamsey Activities

Authorities of the Yerenkyi Krom M/A Basic School in the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region have temporarily shut down the school following tensions surrounding alleged illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, in the community.

The decision was reportedly taken after a teacher was allegedly assaulted, manhandled, and handcuffed by security personnel despite not being directly involved in an ongoing dispute over mining activities in the area.

Meanwhile, some youth and residents of the community have accused the local chief and elders of facilitating the sale of farmlands for illegal mining operations, a claim that has fueled growing unrest among residents.

According to the aggrieved youth, they have consistently opposed illegal mining activities in the area due to concerns about environmental destruction and the impact on livelihoods. They allege that their opposition has resulted in repeated confrontations with authorities and individuals supporting the mining activities.

Speaking to the media on behalf of the youth, Mr. Kofi Duku claimed that this was the third occasion on which residents had faced intimidation for opposing galamsey in the community.

He alleged that heavily armed military personnel and other security operatives were brought into the area and, in the process, assaulted some residents and teachers.

According to him, one teacher who was carrying out his official duties at the school was allegedly arrested and handcuffed despite having no connection to the dispute, prompting school authorities to suspend academic activities in protest.

Mr. Duku appealed to government and other relevant authorities to intervene to prevent further tensions and possible disturbances in the community.

He further disclosed that a formal complaint had been lodged with the Nkawkaw Atta Ne Atta Police Station but claimed that no action had yet been taken to address the concerns raised by residents.

The youth are calling for a thorough investigation into the incident and the alleged illegal mining activities, while urging authorities to restore peace and normalcy to the community.
