Kennedy Agyapong Reportedly Quits NPP to Form New Political Party – Camp Denies Claims

Multiple reports suggest that Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken businessman and former Assin Central MP, has quit the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following his defeat in the party’s flagbearer race, with plans to form his own political movement.

The claims, first reported by GhPage and amplified on social media, stem from statements attributed to George Oti Bonsu, described as a close confidant of Agyapong.

Speaking on the “Ghana Se Sen” radio show hosted by Kwame Tanko, Oti Bonsu allegedly revealed that Agyapong has distanced himself from the NPP after losing the January 31, 2026, primary to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to the reports, a new movement called “The Base” has been formed to support Agyapong’s political ambitions, potentially transitioning into a full-fledged party ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Oti Bonsu reportedly said the decision reflects Agyapong’s desire to pursue the presidency independently, outside the NPP structure.

However, members of Agyapong’s campaign team have firmly denied the rumours.

Joojo Rocky Obeng, former Western North Regional Minister and a key campaign member, described the idea of a breakaway as “politically ridiculous” and “completely off-limits” in a Facebook post on February 13, 2026.

“Defeat is painful, but a breakaway ‘Third Force’ is NOT AN OPTION,” Obeng wrote, urging supporters to focus on reconciliation within the NPP.

Similarly, campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng told Citi FM that Agyapong needs time to reflect post-primary, but breaking away is not under consideration.

The speculation has fueled online discussions, with some supporters praising the idea of a new “third force” while others warn it could fragment the opposition vote.

Agyapong, who placed second in the primary with 23.76% of the vote, conceded defeat on January 31 but has not publicly commented on the quit rumours.

The NPP leadership has not issued an official response, but sources indicate internal efforts are underway to ensure unity following the contest.

As Ghana’s political landscape evolves ahead of 2028, any potential split could have significant implications for the NPP’s recovery after its 2024 election loss.

Further developments are awaited as Agyapong is expected to address his future plans in the coming days.
