Kennedy Agyapong Attacks Bawumia Over Statement He Never Made

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has come under fire after launching a blistering personal attack on former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of lying about a historical party matter—only for video evidence to show that the statement in question was made by Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

In his address to NPP delegates in the Ashanti Region, Chairman Wontumi stated that the party has traditionally retained its first-time presidential candidates, with the sole exception of Professor Albert Adu Boahen. He explained that delegates did not retain Adu Boahen for the 1996 election after his 1992 contest due to poor health, a claim he said is documented in a book by Apenten Appiah-Menka, a close associate of the late professor.

However, Kennedy Agyapong wrongly attributed this statement to Dr Bawumia and proceeded to launch scathing personal attacks.

“I have never seen a liar like our former flagbearer before. This man is a liar for saying that Adu Boahen did not contest because he was sick,” Agyapong said.

The mix-up has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many expressing surprise that Agyapong could misattribute a comment the former Vice President never made and then use it as the basis for unprovoked attacks.

The incident has reignited discussions within the NPP about the tone and accuracy of campaign rhetoric as the party prepares for its flagbearer contest ahead of the 2028 elections.
