Julian Alvarez’s future at Atletico Madrid has become increasingly uncertain after the striker reportedly stopped attending training following the club’s decision to reject any move to Barcelona.
Sources indicate that Atletico privately informed Alvarez and his representatives earlier this week that they would not negotiate with Barcelona over the Argentine forward.
The 26-year-old has subsequently missed two consecutive training sessions, reportedly citing illness.
Atletico have also publicly reaffirmed their position, making it clear that they will not allow Alvarez to join Barcelona this summer.
In a strongly worded statement released on Wednesday, the club said there was “0% chance” of selling the striker to Barcelona.
The Atletico board reinforced the position a day later, stating that its members unanimously supported the decision not to negotiate with the Catalan club.
However, Atletico are reportedly willing to sell Alvarez to Arsenal, creating a potential route for the striker to leave Madrid.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is said to be keen on signing the former Manchester City forward, while discussions between the two clubs have reportedly been positive.
Atletico director Mateu Alemany is understood to have met Arsenal officials in London last week and informed them that the Spanish club would demand around €150 million (£128 million) for Alvarez.
The major obstacle remains the player’s preference. Alvarez has consistently wanted to join Barcelona, and Arsenal’s pursuit had initially stalled because of his reluctance to move to London.
However, with Atletico refusing to negotiate with Barcelona, Arsenal could now represent Alvarez’s only realistic route out of Madrid.
If Alvarez gives Arsenal the green light, reports suggest the transfer could be completed quickly before the transfer deadline.
The situation now appears to be simple: Barcelona is Alvarez’s preferred destination, Atletico have shut that door, and Arsenal are waiting to see whether the Argentine will open another one.
