Hearts of Oak maintained their perfect start to the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season after coming from behind to defeat Bibiani GoldStars 2-1 at Dun’s Park on Sunday.
The Phobians travelled to Bibiani with confidence following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Berekum Chelsea on the opening weekend, but they were forced to dig deep against a GoldStars side determined to recover from their opening-day defeat.
GoldStars made the stronger start and took the lead after just 10 minutes through experienced striker Kwame Opoku, who capitalised on the home side’s early dominance.
The early setback unsettled Hearts, with GoldStars continuing to apply pressure and forcing the visitors to spend long periods defending.
Hearts gradually settled into the game, however, and began creating opportunities as they searched for an equaliser.
Baafi Sparks Hearts Comeback
Their persistence paid off in the second half when Yaw Baafi restored parity with a composed finish.
Kwaku Boateng Henry supplied a perfectly weighted pass for Baafi, who controlled the ball brilliantly before calmly beating the GoldStars goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
The equaliser shifted the momentum in favour of the visitors, who suddenly looked the more threatening side.
Just five minutes later, Hearts completed the comeback.
Baafi turned provider, setting up Kwaku Boateng Henry, who finished off a well-worked move with a superb strike to put the Phobians 2-1 ahead.
Asare Saves Crucial Penalty
GoldStars refused to give up and pushed forward in search of an equaliser as the match entered its final stages.
The home side were presented with a major opportunity when the referee awarded them a late penalty.
But Hearts goalkeeper Benjamin Asare once again demonstrated his importance to the team, producing a crucial save from the spot to deny GoldStars and preserve Hearts’ lead.
The penalty save ultimately proved decisive as the Phobians held on to claim another valuable three points.
Hearts Top Table
The victory is particularly significant given GoldStars’ impressive home record at Dun’s Park.
The Bibiani side had won their previous eight home league matches, making the victory a notable achievement for Hearts.
The Phobians’ ability to recover from an early setback and secure all three points will also provide encouragement for coach Nebojsa Kapor and his team.
Hearts now sit top of the Premier League table with six points from two matches, having scored six goals and conceded just one.
GoldStars, meanwhile, remain without a point from their opening two matches and will be under pressure to respond quickly.
Hearts will host Bechem United in their next league fixture, while GoldStars travel to face Dreams FC.
With two wins from two, the Phobians will enter their next assignment with growing confidence as they seek to maintain their perfect start to the campaign.
