House of Chiefs Cannot Install Chiefs – Otumfuo Clarifies

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has stated that the National House of Chiefs does not have the authority to enstool chiefs in Ghana.
According to him, the power to install chiefs rests solely with traditional councils.
Remarks made at Manhyia Palace
Otumfuo made the remarks during a courtesy visit by Parliament’s Select Committee on Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs at the Manhyia Palace on Tuesday, May 13, 2026.
“What everybody must note is that the House of Chiefs cannot install chiefs. They don’t have that authority. It is the traditional council that does,” he stated.
Warning against politicising chieftaincy
The Asantehene also cautioned against the politicisation of elections within the National House of Chiefs, urging stakeholders to protect the dignity and integrity of the chieftaincy institution.
He called on Parliament and relevant authorities to ensure greater clarity regarding the specific roles of the various Houses of Chiefs in matters relating to enstoolment and recognition of chiefs.
“I do not depend on government”
Otumfuo further stressed that he does not rely on government in handling traditional affairs, explaining that his decisions are guided by the customs and traditions of the Asante Kingdom.
He added that he has no intention of acting as an autocratic leader and does not hold personal grudges against anyone.
Comments on historical territories
Touching on historical territorial arrangements, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II noted that the former Brong Ahafo historically formed part of Western Ashanti.
He said despite constitutional and administrative changes over the years, the historical arrangement has remained unchanged.
Call for reforms in chieftaincy institution
The Asantehene urged the Parliamentary Select Committee to take decisive steps to address challenges facing the chieftaincy institution in Ghana.
He reaffirmed his commitment to truth, fairness, and the preservation of traditional authority and customs.
