GWL Shuts Down Weija Water Treatment Plant Today for Critical Maintenance

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a planned shutdown of the Weija Water Treatment Plant today, Friday, December 19, 2025, to carry out essential maintenance works aimed at improving water service delivery.
According to a statement issued by the company’s Communications Department, the plant will be shut down from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the reliability and integrity of its water infrastructure.
As a result, several communities in the Greater Accra Region are expected to experience a temporary interruption in water supply. Affected areas include Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka Lapaz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, and surrounding communities.
GWL management has assured customers that adequate resources and logistics have been deployed to ensure the maintenance works are completed within the scheduled timeframe.
“Our technical teams will work assiduously to restore operations promptly after the exercise,” the statement noted.
Managing Director of GWL, Adam Mutawakilu, described the maintenance works as critical to safeguarding the company’s infrastructure and enhancing long-term service delivery.
“We have deployed all necessary resources and will work diligently to complete the task on schedule,” he said.
Customers in affected areas have been advised to store enough water ahead of the shutdown to minimize inconvenience to households, businesses, and institutions.
GWL has apologised for any inconvenience the temporary disruption may cause and appealed to the public for patience and cooperation, stressing that the exercise is necessary to improve the reliability of water supply in the long term.
