Greater Accra Minister Orders Urgent Flood Response as Heavy Rains Displace Residents

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to immediately step up emergency response operations following severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall on Monday, June 29, 2026.

In a statement, the Minister instructed all MMDCEs to mobilise emergency response teams alongside officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other technical officers to affected communities. Their tasks include conducting rescue operations, evacuating stranded residents where necessary, assessing the extent of damage, and providing immediate relief support.

“The safety and well-being of every resident remain my highest priority. I have therefore directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to immediately move into their communities with their emergency response teams, NADMO officers and all relevant technical officers to intensify rescue operations, evacuate persons trapped by floodwater where necessary, assess the situation on the ground and provide immediate relief to affected residents,” she stated.

She stressed that all MMDCEs must remain fully engaged until the situation is brought under control, describing the situation as one that demands “decisive leadership and swift action.”

The Regional Coordinating Council is currently working in close collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, NADMO, and other emergency agencies to coordinate ongoing rescue and relief efforts.

With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting continued rainfall, the Minister urged residents to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary movement, and stay away from flood-prone areas, drains, and fast-moving floodwaters.

She also appealed to parents and guardians to prevent children from playing in floodwaters or attempting to cross flooded roads and drains.

Residents in need of emergency assistance have been advised to contact NADMO through its emergency lines or WhatsApp platforms, while the public is encouraged to cooperate fully with emergency responders and adhere to all safety directives.

“My heart goes out to all individuals and families affected by this unfortunate incident. I sincerely sympathise with those who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships, and I want to assure every affected resident that you are not alone. We stand with you during this difficult period,” the Minister added.
