GRA Seizes Illegal Firearms Shipment at Tema Port: 53 Pistols and Ammunition Uncovered
The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a significant cache of illegal firearms and ammunition concealed in a shipment at Tema Port.
The seized items include 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition, all hidden inside suitcases within a 40-foot container numbered MEDU4496951. The shipment, falsely declared as containing vehicles and personal effects, was shipped from the United States and intercepted on November 4, 2024.
Details of the Seizure
Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, Commissioner of Customs, revealed that the inspection was conducted in the presence of the agent and the importer’s representative. During the detailed examination, Customs officers uncovered the concealed weapons and promptly involved the GRA’s Intelligence and Preventive Units, who confirmed the cargo’s illegal nature.
The firearms, ammunition, and magazines were seized immediately, while the container’s remaining contents were detained for further inspection.
Arrests and Legal Consequences
The agent and the consignee’s representative were arrested and are cooperating with investigations. Brigadier Ayorrogo issued a stern warning against importing firearms without the proper licenses, stressing that offenders will face severe legal consequences.
“This operation highlights our commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s borders and ensuring the safety of our citizens,” he stated.
