Gov’t Addresses National Cathedral Controversy Amid Nursing Trainee Allowance Reforms

The Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced a press briefing on July 18, 2025, at 4 p.m. to address the ongoing controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project.
In a Facebook post, he stated, “I will hold a press briefing at 4 pm on the National Cathedral and matters arising. Stay tuned.” This follows the National Cathedral Board of Directors’ opposition to proposals to repurpose the cathedral’s state-owned land into a Cultural Convention Centre.
The Board, in a statement after an emergency meeting on July 7, noted they had received no official communication about the conversion but felt compelled to respond to public reports.
The government had previously dissolved the National Cathedral Secretariat and suspended public funding, with the Office of the Special Prosecutor investigating procurement issues.
Concurrently, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured nursing trainees that their allowances, known as “alawa,” will be paid regularly, addressing past delays and partial payments. The government has disbursed GH¢462 million to cover six months’ allowances for over 120,000 trainees, with payments starting July 16, 2025, fulfilling President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign promise to enhance trainee welfare and strengthen the health sector.
