Government Introduces 100 New Buses to Ease Transport Challenges

The Government of Ghana has unveiled a fleet of 100 new buses aimed at addressing ongoing public transport challenges across major cities, including Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.
The buses are set to be allocated to Metro Mass Transit Limited to strengthen its operations and improve commuter mobility nationwide.
Announcing the development on April 5, 2026, Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stated that the initiative forms part of a broader plan to expand transport capacity.
“In the meantime, 100 29-seater buses have arrived in the country to ease recent road transport challenges,” he said.
The government plans to procure a total of 300 buses, with additional batches expected in August and November 2026.
Background and Expansion Plans
Earlier in February, Deputy Minister of Transport and Jomoro MP, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, indicated that the buses were sourced from Egypt, India, and Dubai as part of efforts to modernise public transport.
She noted that the initiative demonstrates government’s commitment to tackling transportation difficulties faced by the public.
Modern Features Introduced
The newly introduced 29-seater buses come equipped with advanced technology, earning them the nickname “smartphones on wheels.”
Key features include:
Onboard phone charging ports
“Tap n’ Go” contactless ticketing system
Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) for tracking arrivals
Advanced telematics to monitor routes and driver performance
The initiative is expected to reduce reliance on traditional “trotro” services, especially as demand rises ahead of the Easter season.
Maintenance and Sustainability Measures
To ensure durability, manufacturers and investors will handle maintenance for the first 12 months while engineers from Metro Mass undergo training to take over operations.
Spare parts will also be stocked nationwide to enable quick repairs and minimize downtime.
Additionally, government is engaging private sector partners to introduce more buses between March and April, providing a sustainable alternative to private vehicle use.
Miss Affo-Toffey further appealed to the public for patience and support for the government’s broader transport sector “Resetting Agenda.”
