Government Assures Kumasi Residents of Improved Power Supply by Friday

The Government has assured residents in the Greater Kumasi area of the Ashanti Region that recent power outages will soon reduce significantly as ongoing upgrades to key electricity infrastructure near completion.

Speaking on the second day of the Ghana–UK Investment Summit in London on June 2, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, said the challenges facing Kumasi were caused by weak sub-transmission infrastructure, which resulted in persistent localised load shedding despite stable national power generation.

According to the Minister, the situation became evident when the current administration assumed office.

“When we assumed office, we realised there was what you call localised load shedding in Kumasi. The infrastructure was so weak that even when you have a reliable supply of power, the people of Kumasi keep suffering,” he explained.

Mr. Jinapor disclosed that government initiated emergency interventions to address the challenge, including the construction of high-capacity power lines and the installation of additional transformers to strengthen electricity supply within the metropolis.

He stated that the final phase of the project is currently being completed and is expected to be officially handed over by Friday, June 5, 2026.

“We’ve done an emergency project, we’ve put in additional transformers, and the briefing I got this morning is that by Friday the project will be completed and handed over,” he said.

The Energy Minister expressed confidence that the intervention would greatly improve electricity stability in Kumasi and help end the recurring outages that have affected homes, businesses, and economic activities in the area.
