Government Announces Support Package for Ghanaians Evacuated From South Africa Amid Xenophobic Attacks
The Government of Ghana has announced a comprehensive support package for Ghanaian nationals being evacuated from South Africa following reported xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
In a public statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities confirmed that arrangements have been made to ensure the safe return and reintegration of affected citizens back into Ghana.
According to the Ministry, all evacuees will receive a “Welcome Home Financial Package” as immediate relief support upon arrival. The package is intended to ease the transition for citizens who have been forced to leave South Africa under distressing circumstances.
The government further indicated that returnees will be provided with transportation assistance to enable them to travel to their respective destinations across the country.
In addition, a reintegration allowance will be offered to help evacuees rebuild their livelihoods after returning home.
Officials also disclosed that psychosocial support services will be made available to help address the emotional and psychological impact of the attacks.
As part of long-term measures, the Ministry said evacuees will be registered in a special national database designed to link them to job opportunities and entrepreneurship support programmes.
The first batch of about 300 Ghanaians is expected to return on a chartered flight scheduled for Thursday, May 21, as evacuation efforts continue.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaians abroad, stating: “We value and cherish all our citizens.”
