Gomoa Dabenyi New Site Residents Live in Fear as Prolonged Power Outage Fuels Robbery and Snake Threats

Residents of Gomoa Dabenyi New Site in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region have appealed to government authorities and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to urgently restore electricity to the community following a prolonged power outage that has left residents living in fear.

According to the residents, ECG disconnected the community from the national grid due to excessive pressure on a transformer serving the area. Although officials reportedly assured them that power would be restored the following day, the community has remained without electricity for several days.

The blackout is said to be affecting more than 800 residents, creating serious security and safety challenges, particularly during the night.

Speaking to Adom News, residents expressed concern that the absence of electricity and street lighting has made the community vulnerable to armed robbery attacks and encounters with dangerous reptiles such as pythons and cobras.

Some residents alleged that several people have sustained injuries as a result of the situation, including a 12-year-old schoolboy.

Teachers and pupils in the community have also voiced their concerns, noting that the darkness has made movement difficult and dangerous, especially for schoolchildren who travel to and from school.

The Chairman of the Dabenyi New Site Landlords Association, Nana Kofi Agyeman III, appealed to the government and relevant authorities to intervene immediately to address the situation.

He noted that repeated efforts by residents to have the issue resolved have yielded no positive results.

Nana Kofi Agyeman III further called on President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Energy and Green Transition to take urgent steps to restore power to the area and improve security for residents.

The residents insist that restoring electricity is critical to safeguarding lives and property, improving living conditions, and preventing further attacks by criminals and dangerous animals.
