GNAT Demands Immediate Police Action After Attack on Teachers at Kapro

The Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the Ghana National Association of Teachers has unequivocally condemned a reported violent attack, intimidation and humiliation of teachers at Kapro D/A Basic School over pupils wearing red armbands and beads to school.

In a statement dated 16 October 2026, the Regional Secretariat described reports that irate townsfolk stormed the school wielding cutlasses and other dangerous implements, hurling insults and threats, and forced teachers to lie on the floor to beg for forgiveness as utterly disgraceful.

The reported presence of a fetish priest at the school for hours in a public display further heightens concerns about intimidation. Most alarming, the Secretariat noted, is the fact that the affected teachers have reportedly fled their official bungalows to neighbouring towns and villages for fear of their lives. This, it said, is an intolerable breakdown of law and order.

GNAT demanded that the Ghana Police Service act immediately to investigate the incident, arrest persons reasonably suspected of criminal offences and restore law and order without fear or favour.

The Regional and District Education Directorates must urgently coordinate with the security agencies and relevant authorities to guarantee the safety of the affected teachers. Parents must equally take responsibility and cooperate with school authorities in resolving disagreements peacefully and swiftly.

The teachers must stay away from school starting from Monday, 19 October 2026, until the perpetrators are arrested and law and order are restored in the school. The teachers must be fully assured that their own lives and property are secure and that they can be guaranteed a conducive teaching and learning environment before returning to the classroom. No administrative directive or political pressure can take precedence over their safety.

GNAT said it would always hold the relevant authorities accountable for their response. Failure to secure its members would compel the Secretariat to consider further appropriate union actions.

“Enough is enough! Teachers are not sacrificial lambs. Protect teachers. Enforce the law. Restore order at Kapro DA Basic immediately!” the statement concluded.
