Ghana’s Water Pollution Crisis: Heavy Metals Linked to Cleft Lip and Palate Birth Defects

Ghana faces a growing health crisis as heavy metals from illegal mining contaminate drinking water sources, increasing the risk of children being born with cleft lip and palate. Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, CEO of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, warns that exposure to these toxins during pregnancy can cause birth defects.

Cleft lip and palate are congenital conditions affecting one in every 1,000 children in Ghana. While genetic factors contribute, environmental factors like vitamin deficiency, medication, and toxins also play a role. Operation Smile Ghana, a leading provider of cleft surgery, has performed over 2,500 free surgeries since 2011.
