Ghanaian Peacekeepers Injured in Missile Attack on UNIFIL Position in Southern Lebanon

The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed that its battalion serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under missile attack amid escalating hostilities between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

In a press release issued on March 6, 2026, the Ghana Armed Forces stated that the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters was struck by two missiles between 1745 and 1752 local time. The attack was described as a fallout from the ongoing exchanges in the region.

Two soldiers sustained critical injuries, while another suffered trauma. The Officers’ Mess and a Medical One facility were also hit, with the mess completely burned down. The injured personnel are receiving treatment at a Level One Medical Bunker and are currently stable at the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital. Arrangements are underway for their evacuation.

The statement emphasized that troops are now safe in underground bunkers. The Ghana Armed Forces urged the public to remain calm during this fragile period.

Through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana has lodged a protest over the incident. The government has also raised the matter at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, calling on all parties involved in the conflict to uphold their responsibilities and prioritize the safety of peacekeepers in the area.

The release was signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of renewed violence in southern Lebanon, where UNIFIL has repeatedly documented violations of Security Council Resolution 1701, including rocket fire, airstrikes, and cross-border movements. Ghanaian troops have long contributed to UNIFIL efforts to maintain stability along the Blue Line.

The Ghana Armed Forces continues to monitor the situation closely while assuring that the welfare of its personnel remains the top priority.
