Accra, Ghana – A devastating road accident occurred on Monday, October 14, in Ghana’s Western North Region, resulting in 13 fatalities. The victims included seven men, five women, and one child, all passengers on a VIP bus that veered off the road and plunged into a ditch near Kwapia, close to Obuasi.
According to police reports, the bus, registered as ER 2445-11, became overloaded after picking up additional passengers from a broken-down bus along the route. The overloaded bus lost control while navigating a sharp curve, causing it to skid off the road and crash into a ditch.
Eyewitness Accounts
“I saw the bus trying to overtake another vehicle, but it lost control and crashed into the ditch,” said an eyewitness. “It was a horrific scene, with passengers screaming and trying to escape.”
Reactions from Authorities
The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into the incident. “We condemn the reckless driving and overloading that led to this tragedy,” said a police spokesperson. “We will work to ensure justice is served.”

This tragic incident highlights the need for improved road safety measures in Ghana. According to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), from January to July 2024, there were 7,470 reported road traffic crashes, resulting in 1,405 fatalities and 8,560 injuries.
