Central Region Community Demands Immediate Shutdown of Fet Mining Over Eight Years of Alleged Illegal Quarrying, Pollution

The residents of Abora Tetsi in the Abora Asebu Kwamankese District are escalating their protest against Fet Mining Company Limited, urgently appealing to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to halt the quarry’s operations immediately. The community claims the Chinese-owned company has been operating illegally since 2017, causing widespread environmental devastation and significant health issues.

The appeal, released in a press statement on December 5, highlights a devastating litany of complaints, including severe air pollution, contamination of water bodies, destruction of farmlands, and structural damage to community buildings. Residents also report a marked increase in respiratory problems linked to the company’s activities.

Ignoring Regulatory Bodies

The community leadership asserts that Fet Mining has consistently refused to comply with regulations despite being served notices by high-ranking state institutions. Appeals have reportedly been lodged with the Office of the President, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Security, the Minerals Commission, and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking for the community, Okogyeaman Oprepeh X, Tetsihen and Abotsendomhen of the Abora Traditional Area, issued a firm demand for accountability.

“We demand that Fet Mining’s operations be shut down immediately, and a thorough investigation be conducted into the company’s activities,” Okogyeaman Oprepeh X stated.

Direct Appeal to Leadership

The community is leveraging the urgency of the situation by appealing directly to the highest levels of government for intervention.

Specific appeals have been directed at:

  • His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama

  • The Honorable Member of Parliament for the Abora Asebu Kwamankese District, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu

  • All relevant authorities overseeing mining and environmental compliance.

The Abora Tetsi Community’s core demands are centred on justice and restoration:

  • Immediate suspension of Fet Mining’s operations.

  • A thorough and independent investigation into the company’s operational compliance.

  • Compensation for damages and harm caused to the citizenry and their properties.

  • Protection and assurance of safety for community members involved in the protest.

  • Payment of all outstanding revenues and compensations owed to relevant state authorities.

The continued operation of the quarry, described by local leaders as destructive, has brought daily life in the community to a near standstill, prompting the urgent demand for regulatory enforcement.
