Ghana Protests to UN Over Missile Attack on Peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon

The Government of Ghana has formally protested to the United Nations following a missile attack on March 6 that seriously injured two Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.

In a statement issued on March 7, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa confirmed that Ghana had written directly to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, demanding a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the incident.

The attack targeted Ghanaian battalion members deployed under the UN peacekeeping mission, leaving two soldiers with serious injuries. The Ghana Armed Forces previously reported that the strikes also damaged facilities, including the complete destruction of the Officers’ Mess, while troops took cover in underground bunkers.

Describing the assault as “condemnable,” the Foreign Ministry stressed that the incident violated international law and the protections guaranteed to UN peacekeepers under relevant conventions. It called for those responsible to be swiftly identified and held accountable.

The government further urged the United Nations to take immediate steps to bolster the safety and security of Ghanaian personnel and all other peacekeepers operating in the volatile region.

“The Government of Ghana assures our gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured soldiers and their families during this difficult time.”

Ghana reiterated its longstanding commitment to United Nations peacekeeping missions worldwide, while emphasising that the safety and well-being of deployed personnel must remain the highest priority. The ministry affirmed it would continue to closely monitor the situation and maintain active engagement with UN authorities to address the matter.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in southern Lebanon, where UNIFIL has repeatedly reported violations of the ceasefire along the Blue Line. Ghana, a major contributor to UN peacekeeping, has maintained a significant presence in Lebanon for years as part of efforts to promote stability in the area.
