Ghana Medical Relief to Deliver Free Healthcare to 10,000 in Berekum

The Ghana Medical Relief (GMR), a non-profit humanitarian organization, launched its 2025 Medical Outreach Mission on July 21, 2025, aiming to provide free medical care to 10,000 residents of Berekum and surrounding communities in Ghana’s Bono Region.

Running through July 25, 2025, the mission involves 110 volunteers, including medical professionals from the United States and Ghana, offering services such as general medicine, pediatrics, dental care, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, health education, and free medications.

Dr. Samuel Kwapong Owusu, GMR President, emphasized the mission’s focus on preventive care, noting that many beneficiaries have never seen a healthcare provider.

The initiative includes free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration for patients with chronic conditions to ensure ongoing care.

GMR’s efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 for health and well-being. Since 2018, GMR has served over 27,648 patients across communities like Asiakwa, Anomabo, Atibie, Agogo, Tamale, and Bortianor, with its July 2024 Bortianor mission aiding 5,800 residents and registering 2,500 for NHIS.

Dr. Owusu appealed for local institutional support to expand the mission’s reach, highlighting plans for sustainable screening centers.

The entirely volunteer-driven mission relies on donations to provide prescriptions and medical supplies, addressing critical healthcare gaps in underserved areas.
