The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is confident the rehabilitation of the Accra Sports Stadium will be completed in time for Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against The Gambia.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) has suspended domestic football activities at the stadium as rehabilitation works continue to bring the facility up to the standards required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for international fixtures.
The temporary closure has forced Hearts of Oak to relocate their opening home matches of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season to the University of Ghana Stadium.
GFA Confident of Pitch Readiness
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the playing surface would be ready before the Black Stars host The Gambia.
“It’s one of the reasons why there is no domestic football at the Accra Sports Stadium at the moment. I’m very certain that before we play that game against The Gambia, the pitch will be ready,” he told 3Sports.
The Accra Sports Stadium is currently the only venue in Ghana approved to host international fixtures, making the ongoing rehabilitation particularly important ahead of the Black Stars’ AFCON qualifying campaign.
Asante Twum said the GFA had engaged Greengrass Technologies, the company responsible for the pitch, and expects work to intensify in the coming days.
“The only approved venue in Ghana today is the Accra Sports Stadium. There are plans to work on the pitch. Even this evening [Monday], we had a meeting with Greengrass Technologies, who have been working on the pitch. Hopefully, from tomorrow, they will start working on the pitch,” he said.
Black Stars’ AFCON Qualifiers
Ghana are scheduled to host The Gambia as part of their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, with the GFA hoping the stadium will be fully ready to stage the fixture.
Before that home encounter, the Black Stars will travel to face Côte d’Ivoire on September 24, before returning home to host The Gambia three days later.
The GFA will therefore be counting on the rehabilitation works being completed on schedule to ensure Ghana can use its only CAF-approved international venue for the crucial qualifier.
