Ghana captain Jordan Ayew made his long-awaited Sheffield United debut on Sunday, coming off the bench in the Blades’ narrow 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Championship.
Ayew was introduced in the second half by manager Chris Wilder, replacing Ben Brereton Díaz as Sheffield United searched for a breakthrough in a tightly contested encounter.
The Ghanaian forward quickly made his presence felt, registering an effort shortly after coming on as he looked to provide an attacking spark for the home side.
Sheffield United had competed well throughout the match and largely matched Wolves in an evenly balanced contest.
The Blades appeared on course to secure at least a point before the visitors struck late in the game.
Jiménez Delivers Late Blow
Wolves substitute Raúl Jiménez scored the decisive goal in the 90th minute to hand his side all three points.
The goal came after Kieran Trippier found space at the back post and delivered the ball into a dangerous area.
Doyle’s effort took a favourable deflection into the path of Jiménez, who reacted quickest to sweep the ball home from close range.
The late defeat was a frustrating result for Sheffield United, particularly after their positive midweek victory over Blackburn Rovers.
Wilder made four changes to the side that started against Blackburn, with McGuinness, Arblaster, Bamford and Phillips coming into the starting XI.
Ayew was named among the substitutes before being introduced after the interval as Wilder searched for an attacking solution.
Ayew Begins New Chapter
The appearance came just days after Ayew completed his move to Sheffield United as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Leicester City.
At 35, the Ghana captain brings considerable experience to Bramall Lane, having played for several clubs across Europe’s major leagues.
His career has included spells with Marseille, Sochaux, Lorient, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
Ayew has also been a key figure for the Ghana national team and most recently captained the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting all four of Ghana’s matches during the tournament.
His experience and leadership are expected to be valuable to Sheffield United as they continue their Championship campaign.
Having now made his first appearance, Ayew will be hoping to build on his debut, impress Wilder in training and push for a starting role in the coming weeks.
For Sheffield United, the late defeat will be disappointing, but the Blades will have little time to dwell on the result as they prepare for their next Championship assignment.
