Ga North Assembly Clarifies Location of Contested Toilet Facility Under Pokuase Interchange
The Ga North Municipal Assembly has clarified that the controversial toilet facility constructed beneath the Pokuase Interchange was not built at the location approved by the Assembly, although the project itself was awarded by the Assembly.
The clarification follows public criticism after a viral video showed an incomplete toilet facility at a secluded spot beneath the interchange.
Speaking to Citi News, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga North, Akwetey Agbo, said the project was suspended six months ago after the Assembly discovered that the developers had deviated from the approved site.
He explained that although approval had been granted for the construction of the facility, it was intended to be built at a different location, prompting the Assembly to halt the project when the unauthorised change was detected.
The structure has since been demolished.
According to him, the project was intended to address sanitation challenges faced by road users and residents in the area, many of whom resort to open defecation due to the absence of public toilet facilities.
He said the assembly intervened immediately after discovering the contractor had not adhered to the approved plans and location.
“We halted the project over six months ago. Barely three days after work started, we realised the contractor had moved away from the approved site, so we stopped the construction,” he said.
Mr Agbo explained that despite the controversy, there remains a genuine need for a public toilet facility around the Pokuase Interchange.
“If you look at the whole enclave, we actually need such a facility because people, especially those who operate businesses around the area, use the nearby bushes as a place of convenience. We need to address that,” he said.
He added that the assembly intends to construct a public washroom at a more suitable location within the enclave to serve commuters, traders and other users of the interchange.
“There is a buffer around the enclave, so we are going to put up a public washroom there so that anyone in the area who needs such a facility will have a proper place to ease themselves,” he said.
