Former President Akufo-Addo Arrives in Cotonou to Lead ECOWAS Election Observation Mission for Benin’s Presidential Poll

Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has arrived in Cotonou to commence high-level stakeholder engagements as the Head of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM) for Benin’s presidential election scheduled for Sunday, April 12, 2026.

The mission is part of ECOWAS’s commitment to supporting a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process that reflects the will of the Beninese people.

Leading a multidisciplinary delegation, former President Akufo-Addo is overseeing the deployment of:

20 long-term observers

80 short-term observers

25 young professionals

These observers will be stationed across various parts of Benin to monitor all key aspects of the electoral process.

The observation mission operates under the framework of the 2001 ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. Its mandate includes assessing the technical conduct of the polls, the neutrality of state institutions, and the overall political and security environment.

ECOWAS has described the mission’s presence as a “catalyst for promoting democratic governance, stability, and credibility” in the electoral process.

Akufo-Addo has assured that the team will work closely with Beninese authorities to ensure the election upholds democratic principles and strengthens public confidence in the outcome.

This will be the first time the 2027 AFCON co-host nation (Benin) holds a presidential election under regional observation since the recent wave of political transitions in West Africa.

The election is widely seen as a test of democratic stability in the region, especially as incumbent President Patrice Talon is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term.

Further updates on the mission’s activities and preliminary findings are expected in the coming days.
