Former North Tongu DCE Osborn K. Divine Fenu Killed in Car Accident Near Central University

Ghana’s political community is reeling from the sudden death of Osborn K. Divine Fenu, the immediate past District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Tongu in the Volta Region, who perished in a fatal vehicular accident on Sunday afternoon.

The 45-year-old NPP appointee, known for his dedication to local development, was traveling from his hometown to Accra when the crash occurred near Central University College along the Adenta stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway, family sources confirmed.

Fenu, who served as DCE from October 2021 until the NPP’s exit from power in January 2025, was a respected figure in North Tongu, overseeing initiatives like road rehabilitation, education enhancements, and conflict resolution in chieftaincy disputes.

His tenure, marked by endorsements from 41 assembly members upon confirmation, included efforts to address deplorable roads and sand-winning sites, earning praise from traditional councils like Mepe for promoting harmony.

“He was a bridge-builder, always putting the district first,” said Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the area’s MP, who extended condolences and highlighted Fenu’s support during the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage crisis.

Details of the accident remain sparse, but preliminary reports indicate the single-vehicle crash involved Fenu’s official Toyota Land Cruiser veering off the road into a ditch amid heavy rain and poor visibility—common hazards on the N6 highway, which claims over 200 lives annually in the Greater Accra-Volta corridor per MTTD data. No other vehicles were involved, and the cause—possibly a burst tire or hydroplaning— is under investigation by the Adenta District Police. Fenu was pronounced dead at a nearby clinic; his body has been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

The NPP Volta Regional Chair, Makafui Koffi Woanyah, described the loss as “devastating,” noting Fenu’s role in the party’s 2024 campaigns despite the NDC sweep.

This tragedy adds to a somber week of losses, including former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, underscoring the fragility of public life in Ghana.
