Fatal Accident on Accra–Kumasi Highway at Suhum Mankrong Claims One Life, Injures 37

A devastating head-on collision between a 40-seater Zhong Tong bus and a Man Diesel truck on the Accra–Kumasi Highway at Suhum Mankrong on Sunday, January 11, 2026, resulted in one fatality and left 37 others seriously injured.
The crash involved the bus (registration AS 7022-21) and the truck (registration GW 3969-U), both in motion at the time of impact.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus, allegedly traveling at high speed, collided with the truck, causing extensive damage to the front of the bus while the rear of the truck sustained only minor damage.
The 37 injured victims—21 males and 17 females—were among the bus passengers. Occupants of the truck escaped unhurt.
A rescue team from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station, led by ADO II Bernard Boamah, was dispatched at 6:59 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 7:07 a.m.
Firefighters extricated the deceased from the wreckage, provided first aid to the injured, and assisted in transporting some victims to Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.
The GNFS crew also cleared debris from the roadway, restored traffic flow, and ensured the safety of other road users before departing the scene at 8:57 a.m. and returning to base by 9:52 a.m.
The Ghana National Fire Service reiterated its commitment to rapid and professional emergency response in such incidents.
Police have commenced investigations into the cause of the crash, with preliminary indications pointing to excessive speed and possible loss of control.
The accident once again highlights safety concerns on one of Ghana’s busiest highways, especially during peak travel periods. Authorities have renewed calls for drivers to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits.
