Man Arrested After Attempted Theft of Police Armoured Vehicle in Nkawie

A 26-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly attempting to steal an armoured vehicle belonging to the Ghana Police Service in a daring daylight incident at Nkawie in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, Ebenezer Frimpong, was apprehended following a high-speed pursuit by a SWAT team along the Abuakwa–Kumasi stretch on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

According to a police situational report, the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. when a service driver, Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi of the Formed Police Unit (FPU), was transporting the armoured vehicle (registration number GP 1131) from Nkawie to Kumasi for servicing.

Police say the officer briefly parked near Nkawie Market to purchase medication from a pharmacy, reportedly leaving the engine running.

Seizing the opportunity, the suspect allegedly jumped into the vehicle and drove off, leaving the officer and bystanders stunned.

An alarm was quickly raised, triggering a rapid response from the Ashanti Regional Command. A SWAT patrol team, led by Inspector Benjamin Nartey and comprising seven officers, was dispatched to track the vehicle.

The pursuit ended approximately 30 minutes later at Mim, near Abuakwa, where the suspect was successfully arrested.

The stolen armoured vehicle has since been recovered and secured as evidence, while Frimpong is currently in police custody. He has been transferred to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department for further investigations.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the suspect’s motive, as investigations continue.
