Seven Teachers Arrested for BECE Malpractice Across Three Regions

The West African Examinations Council has confirmed the arrest of seven teachers for various examination infractions during the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
According to WAEC, the arrests were made through its monitoring systems and information received from whistleblowers.
Speaking in a telephone interview with the Ghana News Agency, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC’s National Office, John K. Kapi, disclosed that three of the suspects were picked up in the Central Region, two in the Bono Region, and two in the Ashanti Region.
He explained that the teachers were caught smuggling mobile phones into examination halls and engaging in malpractice. Investigations further revealed that some solved questions on external platforms, others used AI tools such as ChatGPT, while some took snapshots of the examination questions.
Mr. Kapi noted that the suspects have since been handed over to the police for further investigations.
He commended whistleblowers for their vigilance and support in exposing the illegal activities, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the integrity of examinations.
WAEC also assured the public that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure the smooth distribution of question papers and answer booklets to all centres nationwide.
Despite isolated challenges at a few centres, Mr. Kapi stated that overall, the examination process has been largely successful.
He urged all stakeholders to remain alert and cooperate with authorities to curb examination malpractice.
