Exonerated! Liberia’s Former Chief Justice Loria Maya Musu-Scott Cleared of Niece’s Murder

Liberia’s former Justice Minister and Chief Justice, Loria Maya Musu-Scott, has been acquitted of her niece’s murder by the Supreme Court. Musu-Scott and three female relatives were previously sentenced to life in prison for the brutal killing of 29-year-old Charlotte Musu in February 2023. However, the Supreme Court ruled that there was insufficient evidence linking them to the crime.

Musu-Scott, a prominent figure in Liberian politics and judiciary, had denied the charges, claiming her niece was killed by an “assassin” who entered her home in Monrovia. The court’s verdict comes after state prosecutors acknowledged that the conviction was based on circumstantial evidence.

Following her release, Musu-Scott expressed joy and concern about the state of the justice system, highlighting the need for more work to be done to protect innocent individuals. She thanked her legal team and emphasized the importance of ensuring justice is served.
