Education Minister Assures Full Measures to Protect Students After Obuasi SHTS Abuse Allegations

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has assured parents and the public that the government will take all necessary legal and administrative steps to strengthen the protection of students following allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School.

He said the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service were determined to fulfil their responsibility of ensuring that schools remained safe environments for teaching and learning.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, 26 October 2026, Mr Iddrisu stressed that the safety and welfare of students would remain a major priority for the government.

“Primarily the essence of this press briefing is to assure the Ghanaian public that the Ministry of Education and the GES will do everything appropriate to safeguard and ensure the protection of all students as a statutory duty. We would not fail in this endeavor. We intend to deploy all administrative and legal tools to achieve this,” he stated.

The Minister said the allegations involving Obuasi SHTS had highlighted the need for stronger institutional safeguards and a comprehensive approach to addressing sexual misconduct in educational institutions.

According to him, the situation presents an opportunity for education authorities and policymakers to review existing measures and introduce reforms aimed at preventing abuse and ensuring that complaints are properly handled.

“The outrageous sexual abuse of many of our young girls as reported offers a golden opportunity for us as policy makers and the education ministry and regulators to issue holistic measures to respond to the abuse,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu also appealed to parents, guardians and students to cooperate with the government and education authorities in efforts to improve safety in schools.

“Today and into the future this should remain government’s most important priority and it will be our important priority. I call on parents, guardians and students to support government for this to succeed,” he added.

Mr Iddrisu maintained that the government would use the lessons from the case to strengthen student protection systems and reinforce accountability within the education sector.
