ECG Records 44 Electrical Incidents in 2025

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) recorded a total of 44 electrical incidents nationwide in 2025, according to the Manager for Safety at ECG Head Office, Ing. Pearl Essel.

She disclosed this at the First Quarter 2026 Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Meeting held at ECG’s Boadi Office in Kumasi on Friday, January 16, 2026. The incidents comprised 16 staff-related cases and 28 non-staff incidents.

Ing. Essel, who joined the meeting virtually, described the figures as concerning, particularly the 20 fatalities recorded nationwide within the period. These included one staff fatality and 19 non-staff fatalities, leading to compensation payments totaling GH₵1,269,765.

Focusing on the Ashanti operational area, she noted that the region recorded four non-staff fatalities and zero staff fatalities. The deaths occurred across Ashanti East, Ashanti West, and the Ashanti Sub-Transmission areas, involving contractor personnel and members of the general public.

In response to recurring safety incidents, near misses and fatalities, the Ashanti Inter-Regional Safety Team, made up of four operational regions, resolved to intensify safety measures with the goal of achieving zero safety incidents in the first quarter of 2026.

The meeting brought together Regional Engineers, Regional Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) representatives, Technical Managers, and the Sub-Transmission General Manager, all of whom reaffirmed their commitment to prioritising safety in ECG’s operations.

Key resolutions included stricter enforcement of safety rules, intensified training for staff and contractors, deployment of Regional Safety Officers to districts, and tighter controls over isolation requests and permits to work.

Participants agreed that safety must go beyond regulatory compliance and become a shared culture across ECG, contractors and the general public.

“No task is so urgent that it cannot be done safely,” the team emphasized, reaffirming ECG’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
