EC Staff Petitions President Mahama to Remove Jean Mensa and Two Deputies Over Alleged Misconduct

An Electoral Commission (EC) staff member, Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to commence removal proceedings against EC Chairperson Jean Adukwei Mensa and her two deputies, Dr Bossman Eric Asare and Samuel Tettey, citing 12 counts of stated misbehaviour.

The petition, submitted Monday under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, accuses the trio of:

1.Cronyism

2.Abuse of office

3.Gross incompetence

4.Conduct that has severely eroded public confidence in the EC

While Mr Adumadzie declined to release full details pending legal processes, he described the officials’ actions as a direct threat to the independence, integrity, and credibility of Ghana’s electoral system.

“My petition is not personal. It is about protecting the dignity of the Electoral Commission and safeguarding our democracy,” he stated.

He has urged President Mahama to immediately forward the petition to the Chief Justice for the establishment of a prima facie case, as required by the Constitution.

The move comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the EC following the 2024 elections and several controversial decisions during Jean Mensa’s tenure.

Neither the EC nor the Presidency has officially commented on the petition as of publication.
