EC Schedules Nationwide By-Elections for November 11 to Fill Vacant Local Seats

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced by-elections for November 11, 2025, to fill vacant Assembly Member and Unit Committee positions across multiple regions, as mandated by the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), amended by Act 940.

The vacancies stem from resignations or deaths, with over 1,500 polling stations set to operate in districts like Ablekuma Central, Weija-Gbawe, Cape Coast, Sekondi-Takoradi, Asuogyaman, Keta, and others across Greater Accra, Ashanti, Volta, Central, Eastern, Bono, Ahafo, Western, and Western North.

EC Chairperson Jean Mensa outlined the process in a statement: nominations opened on October 6 and will close on October 16, 2025, with submissions accepted from October 13 to 16 between 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. daily. Candidates must submit four copies of nomination forms—available free at EC District Offices or www.ec.gov.gh/forms—along with two recent passport-sized photos (red background).

Electoral Area candidates need endorsements from a proposer, seconder, and 18 registered voters from the constituency, while Unit Committee candidates require a proposer, seconder, and eight local voters. Submissions must be made in person to Returning Officers.

The EC, leveraging experience from recent by-elections like Akwatia and Ablekuma North, pledges transparency and fairness. A full list of affected areas and polling stations is accessible at EC offices and online.

Mensa urged voter participation and directed inquiries to Returning Officers or District Offices, reinforcing the EC’s commitment to credible elections amid Ghana’s evolving 2024 electoral landscape.
