Vanderpuye Urges Ofori-Atta to Submit to Accountability

The National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has called on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to submit himself to accountability, warning that avoiding scrutiny could have lasting consequences.

Speaking on Breakfast Daily on April 9, Vanderpuye stressed that public officials have a duty to remain transparent and answerable to citizens.

“It is in his own interest, the interest of the party, and the family he belongs to, to subject himself to accountability,” he stated.

He criticised what he described as a growing tendency among politicians to evade scrutiny, insisting that allegations of wrongdoing must be addressed directly.

“If the people have identified infractions in how you discharged your duties, it is only proper to come forward and answer to them,” he added.

Vanderpuye further cautioned that failure to account for one’s actions could have long-term implications not only for the individual but also for their legacy and family.

His comments come after Mr. Ofori-Atta’s recent release from custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), amid ongoing legal and diplomatic developments.

The former minister, who served under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from 2017 to early 2024, remains under investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, led by Kissi Agyebeng.

He is reportedly facing over 70 corruption-related charges, including allegations linked to a contract involving Strategic Mobilisation Limited that allegedly resulted in significant financial loss to the state.

Additionally, the Ghana government has submitted an extradition request to the United States, while Mr. Ofori-Atta is also seeking permanent residency there as legal proceedings continue.

The case remains a major focus of public and political discourse, with increasing calls for transparency and accountability.
