Black Princesses head coach Charles Sampson says his players have moved past their disappointing opening-game defeat and are ready to respond when they face South Korea at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
Ghana opened their Group D campaign with a 3-0 loss to Ecuador, a result that left the players and technical team frustrated after a difficult outing.
However, Sampson says the squad has recovered emotionally and is now fully focused on producing a positive response in their second group-stage fixture.
“I can say confidently that the girls have overcome the last game shock and the emotions in it, so now it looks like we are ready to go,” he said.
Sampson Admits Ecuador Performance Was Unusual
The Black Princesses coach acknowledged that Ghana struggled to reproduce the qualities they normally display, describing the opening match as an unusual encounter.
“The first game actually was a weird game, weird in many senses that what we normally do at ease did not work, and it can also be so many factors, difficult to pinpoint,” he added.
Despite the setback, Sampson believes the character within the squad will help the players respond strongly.
Focus Shifts to South Korea
Sampson said both he and the players were disappointed after the defeat but have now put the result behind them.
“As a team and the sort of character we have in here, this is a challenge we will handle well.”
“The girls were all down, just like myself, after the first game. We have shaken it off now, we are ready to go and redeem ourselves.”
The Black Princesses will now target a much-improved performance against South Korea as they seek their first points of the tournament and attempt to revive their hopes of progressing from Group D.
