Health: Ahafo Medical Facilities Praise NHIA for Quick Payments

Medical directors in the Ahafo Region are commending the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) for paying their claims promptly in 2025. They say these on-time payments are a big help in running both public and private health facilities day-to-day.

Dr. Tsibo-Takyi, the Medical Director for St. John of God Catholic Hospital in Duayaw-Nkwanta, mentioned that while the money from NHIS claims isn’t always enough to fully support the facilities, getting paid on time is still greatly appreciated.

These comments were made by the medical directors on Monday in Hwediem, Ahafo Region, during a meeting between the NHIA, accredited health facilities, and the Ghana Health Service. This meeting was a key opportunity to discuss and renew their commitment to providing good, accessible healthcare to residents through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Attendees included the Regional Director of Health Services, various District Directors of Health, Medical Superintendents from hospitals, and representatives from mission hospitals in the region.

Call for Higher Tariffs and Concerns About Illegal Charges

Dr. James Ankomah, the Medical Director for Goaso Municipal Hospital, asked the NHIA to consider increasing the payment rates (tariffs) for services under the Scheme in the Ahafo Region. He stressed that the current amounts facilities receive are simply not enough.

In response, George Mawuli, the Acting Regional Director for the NHIA in Ahafo, confirmed that health facilities have received payments up to May, with only a few exceptions. He’s hopeful that these quick payments will lead to better service for people seeking healthcare in the Ahafo Region.

However, Mr. Mawuli also pointed out that some facilities are still charging clients illegal “copayments.” He stated that this practice harms the NHIS’s credibility and makes members distrustful. He called it unethical and a breach of contract, asserting that the NHIA won’t let it continue.

The Acting Regional Director urged all healthcare providers to immediately stop any unauthorized charges and strictly follow NHIS tariffs and policies.

New Initiatives for Transparency

To increase transparency and educate clients, Mr. George Mawuli announced the introduction of the ‘Pulpit System.’ Under this system, NHIS staff will be present at various accredited facilities daily to inform clients about their rights, responsibilities, and benefits. He noted that this initiative will also help get real-time feedback and resolve issues directly at the facility level, asking for “maximum cooperation to make this a success.”

Finally, the Acting Regional Director emphasized that the NHIA is starting a new cycle of credentialing and contract renewals. He urged all providers to ensure their documentation is up-to-date and submitted quickly. He stressed that the NHIA is committed to a smooth and transparent process and expects the same professionalism from all facilities.
