At Least 34 Injured in Bus Crash on Accra–Kumasi Highway

At least 34 people were injured in a road traffic accident involving a passenger bus on the Accra–Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Saturday, January 17, 2026.

The accident occurred near Asuboi when a KIA Grandbird 34-seater bus reportedly lost control, overturned and landed on its side in the middle of the busy highway, causing a temporary disruption to traffic.

The Suhum Municipal Fire Station received a distress call at about 2:55 a.m. and immediately dispatched a seven-member rescue team, led by Station Officer II Antwi Forson, to the scene.

Upon arrival, the fire crew found the driver trapped in the wreckage, while residents and first responders had already assisted in evacuating several passengers. Using specialised rescue equipment, the team successfully extricated the driver, who sustained severe injuries.

Other passengers, many of whom suffered minor injuries, were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital for medical attention. Health officials later confirmed that all victims received prompt treatment and were in stable condition.

Traffic on the highway was temporarily halted to allow emergency operations and clearing of the scene, after which normal movement was restored.

Authorities have since begun investigations into the cause of the accident and are urging motorists to exercise caution, especially when travelling at night on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
