The Head of Protocol at the , Hon. Justice Quarm, has officially launched the maiden edition of the Agona East Food Vendor Support Programme, an initiative aimed at helping reduce the cost of meals for residents.
The programme, launched at Agona Asafo, seeks to support local food vendors by providing them with essential food commodities at no cost. The intervention is expected to enable vendors to significantly lower the prices of meals sold to the public.
The launch attracted a large gathering of residents, food vendors, traditional authorities, religious leaders, government officials and other community stakeholders from across the Agona East Constituency.
Supporting Vendors to Lower Food Costs
The initiative is designed to absorb the wholesale cost of key food items, including grains, tubers and cooking oil, thereby easing the financial burden on food vendors and ultimately reducing the cost of meals for consumers.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Justice Quarm said food security and economic relief must begin at the grassroots level, stressing that the programme is intended to provide sustainable support rather than a one-time intervention.
He urged beneficiary vendors to pass on the benefits of the programme to customers by reducing food prices instead of increasing profits.
“If we support the people who feed us, we feed the entire community at a fraction of the cost,” he said.
Beneficiary food vendors welcomed the initiative, explaining that rising prices of ingredients had forced many of them to either increase the prices of meals or reduce portion sizes.
They expressed optimism that the support would enable them to provide affordable, quality meals while sustaining their businesses and easing the financial burden on households across Agona East.
