AG Reviewing Docket on Afenyo-Markin’s Alleged Assault on Police Officer – Srem Sai Confirms

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has confirmed that the Office of the Attorney General is reviewing the docket in the case of Republic v. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, involving allegations of assault against a uniformed police officer.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Srem-Sai stated: “I can confirm that the docket on the case — The Republic v. Alexander Afenyo-Markin — is at the Office of the Attorney-General awaiting prosecutorial review and decision. The case involves a complaint of assault.”
The matter stems from an incident on May 5, 2025, during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration at Parliament House, where the Effutu MP and Minority Leader was accused of assaulting a police officer at the entrance.
The Ghana Police Service reported on May 8 that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) launched a probe after requesting permission from Speaker Alban Bagbin, who directed Afenyo-Markin to cooperate. He reported on May 7 to assist investigators.
The AG’s office is expected to decide on prosecution soon. Afenyo-Markin has denied the allegations, calling them “politically motivated.”
