Afua Kobi Ampem Girls SHS Students Build Multipurpose Drone for Security, Firefighting and Delivery
Members of the Engineering Club of Afua Kobi Ampem Girls Senior High School at Trabuom in the Ashanti Region have developed a multipurpose drone designed to support intelligence gathering, delivery services, firefighting and marine patrol operations.
The student-built drone can also be deployed for surveillance, border patrol and other security-related activities, highlighting the practical engineering capabilities of the students.
The project was led by the club’s lead engineer and tutor, Sir Ferdinand Sam, who said the drone was built entirely by the students as part of their aerospace practicals.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Sir Sam disclosed that the drone had successfully completed its first test flight on the Suhum By-pass Road.
He said the test provided the team with valuable technical lessons, which would guide further modifications and upgrades to improve the drone’s performance and operational capabilities.
According to Sir Sam, the drone has a wingspan of four metres, a length of 3.5 metres and a height of 1.4 metres, with a total weight of approximately 19.5 kilogrammes.
“Leading the students, we built the drone from scratch, and the idea is to develop solutions to our everyday problems in the country,” he said.
He explained that the project was intended not only to expose students to practical aerospace engineering but also to encourage them to develop technological solutions to challenges facing Ghana.
Sir Sam stressed that the innovation demonstrated the significant potential of Ghanaian students when they are provided with the necessary practical exposure, mentorship and resources in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The Engineering Club is expected to continue improving the drone following its maiden test flight, with the aim of enhancing its reliability and expanding its practical applications.
