Ghana Air Force Receives New Airbus H175 Helicopter from France in Major Fleet Upgrade

The Ghana Air Force has taken delivery of a brand-new Airbus H175 helicopter, flown directly from Marignane, France, and landing in Accra on Thursday, March 5, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing modernisation of its fleet.

The state-of-the-art multi-mission helicopter touched down after completing all technical acceptance procedures with manufacturer Airbus Helicopters. The arrival forms part of a broader defence procurement programme approved by Parliament to strengthen the capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Upon landing, the Acting Defence Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, together with Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi and other senior officials, inspected the aircraft. The new helicopter is expected to boost the Air Force’s operational flexibility in areas such as troop transport, search and rescue, medical evacuation and maritime surveillance.

The acquisition follows Ghana’s first-ever order for multi-mission Airbus helicopters, placed on January 15, 2026. Airbus Helicopters confirmed the contract with Ghana’s Ministry of Defence for four aircraft: two H175Ms, one ACH175 and one ACH160.

The purchase aligns with commitments made during the presentation of the 2026 Budget in Parliament on November 13, 2025. Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson announced then that government would begin procurement in 2026 for four modern helicopters, plus one long-range and one medium-range aircraft, to enhance the Ghana Air Force’s effectiveness.

The delivery of this first H175 underscores the government’s focus on retooling the military with modern, reliable equipment to meet contemporary security and humanitarian needs. Officials say the remaining helicopters under the contract are expected in phases over the coming months and years.

The Ghana Air Force described the arrival as a proud moment that strengthens national defence and demonstrates continued investment in building a capable and professional air arm. The new asset will undergo final integration and crew familiarisation before entering full operational service.
