The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has directed traders operating within the Central Business District (CBD) to sweep their immediate surroundings every hour as part of efforts to maintain cleanliness in the capital.
The directive is intended to sustain the gains made through the monthly National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise and prevent the city’s commercial areas from quickly returning to unsanitary conditions.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in a Facebook post on Monday, September 7, said the Mayor issued the directive on Saturday, September 5, during an inspection of the September NSD exercise with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.
Inspection Covers Key Areas of Accra
The inspection began at the Kinbu Traffic Light and continued through Tudu and other major streets within the metropolis.
The exercise was aimed at assessing compliance among traders and businesses while encouraging them to sustain the cleanliness achieved during the sanitation exercise.
Addressing traders at Tudu, Mr Allotey said the National Sanitation Day had now become a permanent initiative but stressed that keeping Accra clean could not be limited to the first Saturday of every month.
Traders Told to Take Responsibility
The Mayor urged traders to take personal responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of the areas where they operate.
He called on them to regularly sweep their surroundings and remove litter throughout the day.
According to Mr Allotey, sweeping every hour would help prevent waste from accumulating in the busy commercial district, while contributing to a cleaner and healthier Accra.
The directive forms part of the AMA’s broader efforts to ensure that the impact of the National Sanitation Day exercise is sustained throughout each month rather than being treated as a once-a-month activity.
