The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is set to formally hand over a 175.6-kilometre cleared right-of-way for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway to the government on Monday, September 14, marking a major step towards the construction of the long-awaited road project.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to receive the cleared right-of-way at Kwaso, near Ejisu, during a ceremony marking progress towards the construction of the proposed 198.7-kilometre expressway.
In a Facebook post, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the completion of the right-of-way clearing would pave the way for construction of the expressway.
175.6km Corridor Cleared
The cleared stretch was undertaken by the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces as part of preparations for the major road project.
A right-of-way refers to the total width of land legally acquired and reserved for the construction, operation, maintenance and possible future expansion of a road or highway.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, the 175.6-kilometre corridor represents a significant milestone towards the construction of the expressway.
He further described the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project as the single largest capital investment by any government in the history of Ghana.
Major Step Towards Construction
The formal handover is expected to clear the way for construction activities to commence on the major road project.
The 198.7-kilometre Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to improve connectivity between Ghana’s two major cities, enhance transportation along the corridor and support economic activity.
The handover of the cleared right-of-way therefore marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to move the project from preparation to construction.
