53 Nigerians Arrested in Major Cybercrime Raids Across Greater Accra

A joint security operation led by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has resulted in the arrest of 53 Nigerian nationals and the rescue of 44 suspected victims from alleged cybercrime centres in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

The raids, conducted on January 16 and 17, 2026, targeted locations in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba following intelligence gathered by the CSA indicating criminal networks exploiting young men for cybercrime activities.

Minister for Communications, Digitalisation and Innovations, Sam George, announced the arrests in a Facebook post on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

He revealed that nine suspects were identified as ringleaders, while 44 others—believed to be victims—were rescued from apartments where they were operating laptop computers.

The operation involved officers from National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, and the National Police SWAT unit.

Searches at the targeted sites led to the recovery of:

  • 52 assorted mobile phones
  • 62 laptop computers
  • Two pump-action guns

The arrests were distributed as follows:

  • East Legon Hills – 5 suspects
  • Afienya – 11 suspects
  • Kwabenya – 10 suspects
  • Weija – 10 suspects
  • Tuba – 17 suspects

All suspects have been profiled and handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for custody and further investigations.

Minister Sam George cautioned foreign nationals receiving invitations to Ghana to verify claims made by their compatriots before travelling. He noted that individuals arrested in earlier operations have been profiled by the Ghana Immigration Service and INTERPOL and handed over to Nigerian law enforcement at the Seme border, while others are facing prosecution in Ghanaian courts.

“Protecting Ghana’s cyber image internationally is non-negotiable,” Mr George stated.

Security agencies emphasised that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb cybercrime and safeguard the country’s reputation in the digital space.
