30-Year-Old Ginger Farmer Arrested After 19-Year-Old Loses Right Hand in Suspected Theft Confrontation
Incident Occurred at Atwima Trabuom in Ashanti Region – Police Investigating Violent Response to Alleged Theft

A 30-year-old ginger farmer has been arrested by the police in the Ashanti Region after a 19-year-old man allegedly lost his right hand during a confrontation over suspected theft on a ginger farm.
The incident took place in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2026, at Atwima Trabuom.
According to reports, the 19-year-old went to the farm where he allegedly attempted to steal ginger without permission. He was reportedly confronted by the farmer, leading to a violent altercation in which the young man’s right hand was severed.
Kwadwo Amankwa, the Unit Committee Chairman in the area, said the injured teenager had left his home on Friday night without any visible injury. However, when he returned on Saturday morning, his right hand was completely gone.
“I had seen him just days earlier without any injury, but by Saturday morning his right hand was gone. He told me it was the farmer who did it,” Mr. Amankwa stated.
He added that the 19-year-old had been seen loitering around several farms in the community in recent days, which had raised suspicions among residents.
Police were alerted to the incident and promptly arrested the 30-year-old farmer. He is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The injured young man is receiving treatment at a medical facility, though details of his current condition have not been released.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the case, including whether the act was in self-defence or constituted a criminal offence.
This incident has sparked discussions in the community about the rising cases of farm theft and the sometimes extreme responses by farmers protecting their crops.
