26-Year-Old Farmer Jailed 30 Years for Armed Robbery in Assin South

Frank Owusu, a 26-year-old farmer known as “Lifer,” was sentenced to 30 years in prison by the Assin Nsuaem-Kyekyewere Circuit Court in Ghana’s Central Region on October 3, 2025, for robbery and unlawful firearm possession.

Presided over by Judge Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey, the court handed down 30 years for robbery and two months for possessing a locally made pistol without authority, with sentences to run concurrently.

The incident occurred on March 28, 2025, around 11 p.m. in Assin Praso, when Owusu broke into the home of baker Lucy Bremah, who was asleep with her two children.

Armed with a pistol, he stole two mobile phones (GH¢250), reading glasses (GH¢200), and GH¢3,000 in cash after threatening Bremah’s life. Tenants chased Owusu to Assin Adansi school park, recovering the phones and firearm after a struggle, though he escaped with the money.

Reported to police the next day, Owusu was arrested on September 27, 2025, and confessed during interrogation. Assistant Superintendent Nana George Akomeah’s prosecution presented strong evidence, leading to Owusu’s guilty plea. Judge Amoh-Yartey emphasized the sentence as a deterrent amid rising rural robberies, reflecting broader concerns over community safety.

This case follows a pattern of violent crimes in the region, with recent reports of armed robbery shootouts and other offenses, prompting calls for stronger local policing and crime prevention measures.
