2026 WASSCE Begins Across West Africa as Over 500,000 Students Sit for Exams

Final-year Senior High School (SHS) students across Ghana and other West African countries have officially begun the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), with candidates starting today with the Oral English paper.

 

The examination is being administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), which oversees secondary school certification across the sub-region.

 

Over 500,000 candidates registered

 

This year, a total of 509,862 candidates are taking part in the examination. The figure includes 225,274 male candidates and 284,588 female candidates, reflecting strong participation from students across participating countries.

 

Key milestone for SHS students

 

The WASSCE remains one of the most important academic assessments for Senior High School students, serving as the primary qualification for entry into tertiary institutions across West Africa.

 

Examination officials have urged candidates to remain disciplined and adhere strictly to exam rules as the process continues in the coming weeks.

 

The 2026 edition marks another major academic milestone for students hoping to advance to universities, colleges, and professional training institutions across the region.
